In Artistic Gymnastics, competitors perform short routines (ranging from approximately 10 to 90 seconds) on different apparatus. They are then graded based on whether the performance contained certain required movements, the difficulty of the movements performed, and how well their performance compared to the desired performance of that movement. This is regulated in the 'Code of Points'.
The challenge of the "task" in sports is especially apparent in gymnastics where each new skill presents a new task to be mastered. A task oriented environment is one where the athlete is taught to find as much satisfaction in the journey (learning process) as she derives from reaching her destination (fulfilled goals). If an athlete enjoys the journey, her level of commitment will be greater, her response to mistakes and failure will be tempered with perseverance, and her motivation will be fueled by endurance. The coach has a significant influence on whether or not the journey is a rewarding one.
